Event Highlights

The one-day only live event “SEGA UNIVERSE PLAYGROUND,” taking place on Saturday, August 8, 2026, will be held under the concept of “BREAK THE SCREEN.” It will bring SEGA’s classic titles—which have defined their eras—to life beyond the screen, delivering a new experience through a diverse range of content including music, art, graphics, talk shows, and food.

In addition, the “SEGA UNIVERSE POPUP STORE,” a limited-time shop featuring merchandise from “SEGA UNIVERSE” titles, will be open from Friday, August 7, through Sunday, August 30.

Program ①: Oji Hiroi Takes the Stage! “Sakura Wars” 30th Anniversary Special Talk Show

Event Times: Part 1: 2:00 PM – 2:45 PM / Part 2: 4:45 PM – 5:30 PM

We will host a talk show featuring Oji Hiroi, the original creator of “Sakura Wars”. In Part 1, titled “The Eve of Sakura Wars—The Road to Its Creation,” Oji Hiroi will discuss how Sakura Wars came to be, sharing behind-the-scenes stories from the initial concept to the launch of the project, as well as the many dramatic events surrounding its creation. Part 2, titled “Sakura Wars—A Storm of Romance Amid the Taishō Cherry Blossoms,” will delve into the story behind the boom that transcended the realm of gaming to become a social phenomenon after its release, captivating countless fans.

Oji Hiroi (Original Creator of Sakura Wars)


Born in Tokyo in 1954. Director and character designer.

After founding “Red Company” in 1976, he became a hit-maker in toy design and animation, later expanding into novels and manga.

He conceived Sakura Wars, released by SEGA in 1996, and served as the executive producer overseeing its expansion from the game to stage productions and music.

He continues to be active in a wide range of fields, including stage directing and writing original stories for TV anime.

 

Atsuko Uchida (Host)

Freelance announcer.

She left Higashi Nippon Broadcasting to become a freelancer. She served as a regular anchor on Nippon TV’s “Oha!4 NEWS LIVE” for about 10 years. From 2023 to 2025, she also worked as an employee of SEGA Corporation.

She is active in a wide range of fields, including her own YouTube channel, which has over 100,000 subscribers.

Knxwledge

A two-time Grammy Award-winning producer, DJ, and composer who has worked on over 200 albums.

Currently based in Japan, he continues to tour worldwide while seamlessly creating over eight tracks that transcend genres.

DJ Mitsu the Beats

A Sendai-based DJ, beatmaker, and producer.

While active as a member of the hip-hop group GAGLE, formed in 1996, he has also earned high acclaim both domestically and internationally as a solo artist.

His unique sound—a fusion of his diverse musical background, including jazz, soul, and neo-soul, with warm sampling and delicate beatmaking—has garnered support from many listeners and artists.

He has contributed to numerous tracks and remixes, and as a DJ, he has been actively performing not only throughout Japan but also overseas. He has appeared on various stages, including Boiler Room, delivering his one-of-a-kind groove.

In recent years, he has continued his life’s work, “Daily Beats,” creating and releasing beats on a daily basis. Furthermore, while releasing ambitious works such as the “Level” series, he continues to constantly pursue new forms of expression.

In 2026, the track “Stack Wave feat. STUTS,” released under the name DJ Mitsu the Beats, was nominated for the Best Instrumental Track award at the MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2026. His beatmaking skills, honed over many years, and his unique musicality were highly acclaimed on the stage of one of Japan’s largest international music awards.

With his latest solo work, “NEW HORIZON”, among others, he continues to lead Japan’s beat music scene while gaining support that transcends genres, generations, and national borders.

SEQYAMA

A native of Kawasaki City, he has worked as a dancer and magazine editor, and is currently active as a DJ, among other roles.

Since 2018, he has served as the arena DJ and head music selector for the men’s professional basketball league team “B.League: Kawasaki Brave Thunders.” He is also active as part of the DJ and street-strolling unit “Keihin Denki” with Ani from Scha Dara Parr.

KASHIF

Guitarist, musician, and sweets enthusiast.

Starting with key indie artists from the 2000s onward, he has provided strong support for numerous recordings and live performances, while also composing songs and producing sounds.

As a solo artist, he’s also making waves with his “Guitar DJ” style, where he performs self-produced sessions by playing guitar while DJing.

Released the solo album “BlueSongs” in 2017.

The game console I’m most attached to is the SEGA Genesis.

MPC GIRL USAGI

MPC player / musician. Graduated from the Department of Performance, Faculty of Arts, Osaka University of Arts.

Armed with the sense of rhythm he honed as a drummer, he has established a unique live style that fuses finger drumming with electronic music.

In addition to his diverse activities—including live performances, music production, songwriting, and music education—he has collaborated with numerous companies both in Japan and abroad and made frequent media appearances.

Through his one-of-a-kind “MachineLive” performances, he is showcasing the new possibilities of the MPC to the world.

Hiro

Joined SEGA in 1984. He has composed music for numerous games, primarily in the “Taikan Game” series, starting with Hang-On. His representative works include OutRun, After Burner, Fantasy Zone, maimai, and many others. He currently provides music for a wide range of titles, from arcade games to home consoles. He is affectionately known as “Master Hiro” by his colleagues at SEGA and by fans.

 

Takenobu Mitsuyoshi

Joined SEGA in 1990. A SEGA employee who has been actively involved in various fields—including sound development, voice acting, and singing—since the early days of game music bands. His source of energy is hearing customers say, “That was fun.” His representative works include Daytona USA and Shenmue. He is also deeply involved in SEGA’s music game titles.

Every Friday at 8:00 PM, video content titled “SEGA SOUND STREET” is streamed on the SEGA Sound Team’s official YouTube channel.

Program ③: Workshop to Create Event-Exclusive T-Shirts

Event Hours: 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM / Participation Fee: 5,000 yen (tax included)

 

We’re hosting a workshop where you can create T-shirts featuring graphic designs from Sakura Wars, OutRun, and Dynamite Cop using silkscreen printing. With designs by Kenya Ebina, a design instructor at Vantan Design Institute, and silkscreen printing performed by students majoring in textiles at Musashino Art University, you’ll get to experience the appeal of SEGA IP as cutting-edge graphic content.

Program ④: Food and Drink Sales in Collaboration with “ON THE CORNER Shibuya”

In collaboration with “ON THE CORNER Shibuya” on the B1F of Shibuya PARCO, we will be selling venue-exclusive food and drinks inspired by Rent A Hero, Streets of Rage, Fantasy Zone, and SGGG, as well as “NO OLD, STAY GOLD”—a collaboration beer between “Teenage Brewing” and “SEGA UNIVERSE.”

Program ⑤: Collaborative Art Exhibition by SORA, a High School Student Artist

We will be hosting a special exhibition featuring collage artworks by SORA, a high school student artist, interpreting the imaginary “SEGA SATURN” that exists in “the dream world” of NiGHTS into Dreams….

 

SORA

Born in Tokyo.

He began creating graffiti at age 8 and draws inspiration from ethnic cultures, signage, trash, 3D models, and music to produce collages and paintings.

He also creates genre-less cosmic sound collage mixes by editing ASMR and ethnic music. He presents his work by transforming the entire space into a work of art that engages both the visual and auditory senses. At his solo exhibition “N U R,” he presented a sound installation using a projector.

 

Program ⑥: “Guardian Heroes” Gameplay on the Big Screen

Event Hours: 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM

 

The VS Mode of “Guardian Heroes”—a fighting RPG where four adventurers who have obtained the “Legendary Sword” battle alongside an undead hero to defend the kingdom—is now connected to PBOX STND’s large-screen monitor! Relive those memories while actually playing the game. (The exhibition uses the HD version.)
